Louis Koekemoer is a fire and rescue veteran and visionary innovator with over 35 years of hands-on experience in firefighting, search and rescue, and hazardous fire environments. Beginning his career in 1988 in South Africa, Louis quickly advanced into elite rescue roles and later served as Chief of Search and Rescue for the Abu Dhabi Air Force, overseeing complex operations in high-risk situations.
In 2021, driven by a commitment to safer, more sustainable fire suppression solutions, Louis founded Fireblock (Pty) Ltd, now operating globally as Fireblock International. As both inventor and managing director, he has led the development of biodegradable, environmentally responsible fire suppression technologies, establishing the company as a global leader in innovative firefighting solutions.
Louis has a deep specialisation in lithium-ion battery fires, conducting years of controlled burns and live-fire testing across various chemistries, including LiFePO₄, NMC, and LCO. His practical, hands-on expertise extends to electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and consumer electronics, making him one of the world’s foremost authorities on lithium fire mitigation.
His work has drawn international attention, including invitations from Delta Batteries in Slovakia and Civil Defence Authorities in Dubai, to demonstrate his cutting-edge technologies. In 2026, Louis will travel to Qatar to present two of his latest innovations:
- The Fireblock EV Suppression Tool, designed to pierce and cool burning EV batteries at the source of thermal runaway.
- The Fireblock Mechanical Aviation Extinguishing Device, a revolutionary, gas-free, mechanically pressurised extinguisher ideal for aviation applications.
Louis’s innovation journey began with Fireblock Avert for the agricultural sector, evolving to Fireblock Forest for forestry and industrial applications, and Fireblock Coal Cool, now widely used in Mozambique’s coal mining operations. His success comes from a unique ability to listen to real-world challenges and create practical solutions, resulting in a growing range of life-saving products.
